Why convert JPG to WebP?

Lossy to lossy

Both JPEG and typical WebP delivery are lossy. Decoding a JPG and encoding WebP is a new quantization pass, not a lossless transcode of the DCT coefficients. Fine grain and small type can soften. The usual win is fewer bytes at a similar glance quality — often tens of percent on photographs — because WebP’s prediction and entropy coding beat baseline JPEG for many pictures.

The source JPEG has no alpha; the WebP will be opaque unless you key a background. Formatly uses the browser to decode JPEG and the canvas WebP encoder to write the output. There is no server-side cwebp binary.

When JPEG should stay JPEG

Print labs, some older CMS, and a few mail plugins still want .jpg. If the recipient cannot open WebP, you have created extra work. Re-encoding a JPEG that is already small and noisy rarely pays; you spend CPU and may add artifacts for a tiny size win.

If you need transparency, start from PNG or a keyed export — not from JPEG. If you need lossless, PNG or lossless WebP from a lossless source is the path, not this pair.

Quality control

The quality slider is the canvas WebP quality. Compare against the original at 100% on a high-contrast edge (hair, type on a photo, a horizon). For hero images, err high. For thumbnails, you can push lower. EXIF from the JPEG is not a guaranteed copy into WebP; strip options exist if you do not want GPS in the public asset.

Verify locally in DevTools

Watch Network while you drop a JPEG. You should not see the photograph posted to a conversion endpoint. The .webp download is produced in this page. Codec or app scripts loading is expected; an upload of the original file is not.
