Why convert HEIC to JPG?

iPhone photos often arrive as HEIC. JPG is the format Windows, email, and the open web understand without extra codecs — this is the most common HEIC export.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

What the codec actually does

iPhone stills labeled HEIC are usually a HEIF container with an HEVC (H.265) image. Windows, Gmail, many CMS uploaders, and older browsers still choke on that container. JPG is baseline DCT JPEG — the interchange format cameras, email, and the open web already share.

Formatly decodes HEIC in the tab with a WebAssembly library (heic-to). That step bakes EXIF orientation into the pixels so the export is not sideways. The bitmap is then encoded as JPEG with the browser canvas encoder. You pick quality; there is no server-side ImageMagick queue. Formatly does not write HEIC — only decode it.

When you should not convert

Keep the HEIC if the next device is another iPhone or a Mac that already opens it. Converting to JPEG throws away the efficiency that made Apple pick HEIF in the first place, and it is a lossy encode on top of whatever the camera already quantized.

If you need a lossless working copy for design (alpha, further edits, no extra JPEG blocks), export PNG instead. If you need a smaller web asset and the destination supports it, WebP is often the better target than a default JPEG. Use this page when the recipient literally cannot open HEIC.

Quality, metadata, and size

JPEG quality in the tool maps to the canvas encoder. For chat and email, the default is usually enough. For a print lab or a portfolio, push quality up and check the file at 100% — HEVC-to-JPEG is not a bit-identical round trip. GPS and camera EXIF can be stripped on export if you do not want a location attached to the JPG.

Live Photos, depth maps, and multi-image HEIF bursts are not a full Apple library export. You get the primary still. Animated or sequence HEIC is outside this converter.

Proof the photo does not leave this device

Open Chrome or Edge DevTools → Network, then pick a .heic file. You should not see a POST or PUT of the photo to a conversion API. You may see a late JavaScript/WASM chunk: that is the HEIC decoder loading after you choose a file, not the picture uploading. The JPEG you download is encoded here, then saved with the browser download dialog.
